Minecraft Beacon Calculator

A full level-4 beacon needs 164 mineral blocks (81 + 49 + 25 + 9). Levels 1, 2 and 3 need 9, 34 and 83.

Different arrangement?

Beacons stand side by side on one shared base, from 1 up to 5 in each direction.

(?)

Mineral type does not change the powers. This selection estimates crafting the entire base from one material, at 9 raw items per block.

Structure files hold the whole pyramid with its beacons and any glass above them, so a mod or a structure block can show or place it for you. They are made in your browser and never uploaded.

Java with the Litematica mod: put the .litematic file in the schematics folder inside your .minecraft folder. In the game, press M, choose Load Schematics, select the file and load it. It appears where you stand as a see-through guide to build along.

Bedrock: in a Creative world with cheats on, get a structure block with this command:

      /give @s structure_block

Set the structure block to Load, press Import, choose the .mcstructure file, then press Load. Import is only on Windows. A structure block loads at most 64 × 64 blocks across and 384 high, and the empty cells keep whatever is already in your world.

About this tool and common questions

How many blocks does a full beacon need in Minecraft?

A full, four-level pyramid for one beacon needs 164 mineral blocks — 2 stacks + 36. If you use only iron, that is 1,476 iron ingots. These totals cover the solid base only; bring the beacon block and the item used to activate its powers separately.

        49×9 + 7×7 + 5×5 + 3×31641,476

Each layer is filled, not hollow. Add the area of every layer to get the base block count: 81 + 49 + 25 + 9 = 164 for level 4. Multiply by 9 to convert iron blocks to iron ingots. Other material choices keep the same block count.

How do you make a beacon in Minecraft?

Craft it from 5 glass, 3 obsidian and 1 nether star. The nether star drops when you defeat the Wither.

Then build a solid pyramid of iron, gold, emerald, diamond or netherite blocks: one 3×3 layer for level 1, up to four layers and 164 blocks for level 4. Place the beacon on the centre of the top layer with a clear view of the sky; glass above it is fine.

Open the beacon and put in one iron ingot, gold ingot, emerald, diamond or netherite ingot to choose its powers.

        Choose the pyramid level

Can you use copper blocks for a beacon base?

No. Only blocks of iron, gold, emerald, diamond and netherite count, and copper blocks are not one of them. You can mix those five in any layer; the material changes neither the powers nor the range.

Count a base of mixed blocks

Can several beacons share one base?

Yes. Four beacons in a 2×2 need layers from 4×4 up to 10×10, totaling 16, 52, 116 or 216 base blocks for levels 1–4. Six beacons in a 2×3 need layers from 4×5 up to 10×11, totaling 20, 62, 134 or 244 base blocks. At level 4, six beacons can run all five primary powers plus regeneration.

These totals exclude the four or six beacon blocks and their activation items. Each beam still needs a clear view of the sky; glass is fine, and bedrock is fine in the Nether.

How many beacons can share one base?

As many as you place side by side, as long as every beacon still has a full pyramid under it; neighbours share the blocks between them. This calculator plans rectangles of up to 5 × 5 beacons. Nine beacons in a 3×3 at level 4 need 276 blocks: 11×11 + 9×9 + 7×7 + 5×5.

        Choose a different arrangement

How do you change the beacon beam colour?

Put stained glass or stained glass panes in the beam above the beacon. The lowest glass sets the colour, and each glass above it is mixed half and half with the colour below, so the top glass counts most. Clear glass changes nothing.

The beam colour question in this calculator builds the stack for you: add glass to see the colour, or pick a colour and let it find the glass. It uses Java Edition’s colours.

Where exactly do I build it?

Stand where the north-west beacon will go and read your block position: press F3 in Java Edition, or turn on Show Coordinates in Bedrock Edition. Enter that X, Y and Z under “Building at exact game coordinates?” in the 2D layers.

Each layer then shows its Y level and its X and Z range, starting one block below the beacons, and the range question shows where the effect reaches. In the Overworld the whole pyramid has to fit between Y −64 and Y 319.

        Enter your coordinates

What range and duration does the calculator show?

The displayed effect radius uses Java values: 20, 30, 40 or 50 blocks for levels 1–4. The effect lasts 11, 13, 15 or 17 seconds; Java re-applies it every 80 game ticks (4 seconds at normal tick speed) while you stay in range. This is an effect estimate, not a map of every affected block or an edition-specific beam simulation.

        How are these materials counted?

The table adds the area of each solid layer; the calculator also supports the shared rectangular bases described above. It counts the pyramid separately from crafting and activating the beacon, as described in the beacon section of Minecraft’s official recipe guide. That guide explains beacon basics, rather than supplying the totals in this table.

Counts assume the standard mineral-block pyramid. Mods or server rules that change beacon construction, powers, or range are outside this calculator’s scope.
